Through November 6, 2016. Celebrate Halloween where it all began! More than 3,000 years ago, the ancient Celtic Festival of Samhain, which we now call Halloween, first began in Meath, Ireland. It was a festival to celebrate the end of the old Celtic Year and the beginning of the New Year, and it was believed that the spirits of all who had died since the last Oíche Shamhna (Night of Samhain) moved on to the next life. The Spirits of Meath Halloween Festival reenacts the Samhain Festival on the historic Hill of Tlachtga with music, song, storytelling and pageantry, culminating in a procession to light a bonfire at the top of the hill to ward off bad fortune for the coming year and any evil spirits. Other events around the county include a House of Horrors, Haunted Spooktacular, Farmaphobia, Terrifying Treasure Trails and Pooka Spooka during the day and spine-tingling spooky themed nights. Check out the Spirits of Meath Halloween Festival, Ireland’s biggest and scariest Halloween Festival!
