Coming July 30, 2014. For an event that’s a little out of the ordinary, check out the Chincoteague Annual Pony Swim. About 150 wild Chinocotegue Ponies (AKA Assateague Horses) and their foals are rounded up by “Saltwater Cowboys” to swim across the¬†Assateague Channel to Chincoteague Island, off the coast of Maryland and Virginia. After a brief rest, the ponies are paraded to the carnival grounds where the larger foals are later auctioned off. There are a few select foals that are designated as ‘buybacks’. A buyback pony is auctioned but it is donated back to the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company and returned to Assateague Island to live out in the wild. A unique event worth a visit!
