Coming June 8, 2017. Push your limits on the water. It’s the Race to Alaska (R2AK) hosted by the Northwest Maritime Center. Start in Port Townsend, Washington and travel 750 miles to Ketchikan, Alaska. No motors – just human or wind power. No support – nobody following along with a food drop, no pre-arranged help, no relay relief team. Past races have seen kayaks, SUPs, catamarans, pedal boats, and of course, sail boats. Expect some hostile sailing environments with tidal currents up to 20mph, gale force winds, freezing temperatures, freighters, and floating hazards. Last year’s winner completed the race in an amazing 3 days, 20 hours, and 13 minutes! First place wins you $10K and second place garners you a set of steak knives! The R2AK is beyond question a test of adventure, self-reliance, and a love of the water.
