The first underwater museum in the Southern Hemisphere! Australia’s recently opened Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA) in Townsville, North Queensland, features the works of artist/activist Jason deCaires Taylor. Located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, the vision of MOUA is to provide an underwater experience which inspires reef conversation; achieves positive environmental outcomes; and engages the community in the cultural stories of land and sea. The sculptures (and building in the case of the Coral Greenhouse pictured above) are designed out of materials that complement natural coral growth. The plan is to have installations in 4 locations: Coral Greenhouse, Ocean Siren, Palm Island, and Magnetic Island. Tour operators will take divers and snorkelers to explore the 2 installations that are currently in place. Though travel at this time may not be ideal, the Museum of Underwater Art is definitely a destination to add to the bucket list!
