Patagonia… original land of the giants? At the southern end of South America, where the Andes end, Magellan and his fellow Spaniards (whose heights averaged 5ft 1in) encountered the Tehuelches people (whose heights averaged 5ft 11in) in 1520 and named them the Patagon, roughly interpreted as “big footed,” and their land as Patagonia, the “land of the big footed.” Stories of giants ensued, and the region became one to be feared by explorers. But now with Torres del Paine National Park and tourism dominating Patagonia, it is a wonderland for TrailblazerGirl and other adventure seekers. And one of the very best places to stay as your hub is the Hotel Salto Chico which offers more than 35 different excursions, including hikes and treks, horseback rides and even becoming a gaucho for the day. Magellan is certainly missing out.
